Nigerian stand-up comedian has explained why his House was burnt for supporting Peter Obi, during last year presidential election. In the build up to the election, Ayo Makun disclosed his support for Peter Obi, believing that the emergence of Peter Obi would be best for Nigeria.
But his house was burnt by the supporters of other candidates who considered him a traitor for supporting Peter Obi of Labour Party.
He explained that he had nothing to do with politics but was coerced into declaring his support for Peter Obi by his teeming fans.
“but guess what, peope kept on saying to me, AY, your voice must be heard , you have over 25m followers cut across the social media strata, your voice must be heard” he said. The push made him speak up for the Labour Party candidate “Omo, na him they hear my voice o. As they hear my voice, my house burn”
Election in Nigeria is often cut across tribal line and any tribe’s man is expected to vote for his brother President Bola Amed Tinubu was a frontrunner with APC, and Ayo was expected to support his Yoruba brother. His support of an Igbo presidential candidate led to burning of his house. The support was considered a stab in the back by the supporters of APC who put tribe or region first.
President Bola Tinubu later emerged the winner of the election, and AY kept his cool, without uttering any word but now. Supporters of APC tried to cajole the comedian for his candidate losing the election.
Now, he has come forward to speak regarding his role “I supported Peter Obi, as I am here, I still stand before you and say, I do not regret supporting Peter Obi” he said on Monday, while speaking on the podium of his latest show .
The country was dissected under Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians desperately wanted a change of status quo, believing that politicians damaged the country, but the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, was a polished politican who could change the situation of the country. The popular belief became a ballot revolution, to upset the equation in the country – a revolution that failed in the end.
“Na where my problem start be this o, the decision I made to support Peter Obi not because I am a politician, but because I want Nigeria to become better. I know nothing about politics, but nobody advised me” he said about his involvement in the whirl wind push to politically upturn the status quo.
The comedian did not say if he would continue to be outspoken when it comes to his choice of candidate, although he appears to be adamant. Many supporters of Peter suffered attack in the build up and during the presidential election, especially in Lagos State, which is the stronghold of President Bola Amed Tinubu.
The President was defeated in Lagos State with small margin despite the claims of rigging and voters suppression in the State. AY and other Nigerian celebrities live in Lagos, even though Peter Obi lost the election, their voices were loudly heard in the State.
