Xabi Alonso became the most wanted coach in football after his move to Bayer Leverkusen, where he is now, barring any colossal dip in form poised to dethrone Bayern Munich, the regular German champion.
His decision to choose Bayer Leverkusen brightened his career choices with many clubs now chasing his signature. The chase for Xabi’s signature overshadowed transfer news for some time now, but it appears a decision has been made.
Liverpool Football Club is one of the clubs in hunt for the signature of the ex-Spanish international. He began his early climb to elite football career in Liverpool, where he won a Champions League trophy before departing for Real Madrid.
His time in Liverpool will be remembered for his goal against Chelsea that ended Mourinho’s unbeaten run of years at Stamford Bridge. And the penalty kick that equalised AC Milan first half three zero in Istanbul.
Liverpool faced challenges to keep hold of their squad then, leading to the exit of Xabi Alonso, alongside other players. He was replaced by Aqualani, but the ex-Spanish player couldn’t make his mark as a result of injury and Liverpool soon found out that Xabi Alonso could not be replaced. His exit affected Liverpool who could not get the connection needed for Gerald from the base of the midfield.
His time at Real Madrid was even better. He excelled at Real Madrid and won trophies under Mourinho. His importance in the team was never underestimated as he played beautiful football and ensured Real Madrid fans enjoyed his skill sets. After his time at Madrid, the ex-Spanish defensive midlfielder moved to Bayern Munich to give way for new or emerging talents in Real Madrid.
His time at Bayern Munich capped a wonderful story of success in his career. Spoilt with trophies in club and country, Xabi Alonso excelled in Munich and played a classy football. He was Bayern’s pivot player, controlling and dictating the midfield in a fashion that’s rare.
Now a coach, he is spoilt with the choice of choosing between his ex-clubs Bayern, Liverpool and futuristically Real Madrid. Bayern has sacked Tuchel, while Liverpool’s most successful coach in recent history has announced his resignation. Klopp did not specifically give any negative reason for his resignation, except that he has exhausted his energy.
Bayern are in search of a new coach to replace Tuchel in the summer, while Liverpool is on same mission. The two clubs have reportedly approached Xabi, and in the media, there have been rumours that he has chosen Liverpool over Bayern. On multiple occasions, the Bayer gaffer has distanced himself from comments regarding his future.
Finally, he has declared that he would continue as a Bayer Leverkusen coach, in what is a blow to Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Xabi said he wants to stay focused and develop as a coach, knowing that he has not been long in the business. He would work assiduously to payback the confidence Bayer had in him to have appointed him.
Xabi’s release clause can only be triggered in 2025, giving him just another year to serve as Bayer Leverkusen coach without being poached by his admirers.
Speaking on his future, the gaffer said “I am not gonna comment about Liverpool or Bayern. These are big clubs and I have strong links with them, but I am in the place where I want to be. it is not time to decide my future now, I want to develop at Bayer Leverkusen” he highlighted.
He appreciated Bayer and declared “I feel that this is the best way, to continue together” before saying that he has also informed the players.
Xabi continuing at Bayer is a welcomed development and news worth celebrating for Bayer fans, atleast for now. Xabi had a deadline to decide his future this week and he has exactly given Bayer fans something to be happy about.
