China And Russia Play Politics Of Ego In Veto Of Gaza-Israel UNSC Resolution
By Dailytab24.
China and Russia have vetoed a United Nations Security Council Resolution that called for six weeks “immediate and sustained ceasefire” in Gaza.
The resolution was drafted by United States, which was supposed to push for the release of hostages and ceasefire. The ceasefire is entwined in the release of the hostages. The resolution also called for significant humanitarian aid delivery in Gaza.
The resolution is the first time United States have drafted a resolution aimed at ending the war, returning the hostages and increasing humanitarian aid delivery in the Gaza Strip.
Previously, United States have only done the job of vetoes. Couple of resolutions on Gaza-Israel war have been drafted by other member States in the security council, but the resolutions were shot down by US who believe the resolutions were one sided and against Israel. US said it would support balanced resolution that will secure release of hostages and ceasefire.
United States have stood firmly for Israel and blocked resolutions that would have forced Israel to stop the war without returning its hostages. The United States explained that resolutions that would not call for release of hostages and ceasefire would be vetoed by it. It also said it would support resolutions that aim to increase humanitarian aid delivery.
Israel set aims of the war in Gaza, which include elimination of Hamas and returning of hostages. The US drafted resolution firmly addressed the release of hostages as a price for ceasefire.
China and Russia are permanent members of the security council and have the vetoe power US wields. Without a concrete reason for their vetoe, Russia and China appears to play politics of ego than relevance or reason-based.
Speaking on the reason Russia vetoed the resolution that appears to have balanced or settled the war in Gaza. Moscow said it was a “hypocritical spectacle” from United States.
Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s UN Ambassador said the resolution was aimed to soothe Israel and put pressure on Hamas. He further said without evidence that the resolution gives Israel the audacity to continue its military campaign in Gaza. He neglected the fact that the resolution called for “immediate and sustained ceasefire”.
Owing that the resolution obviously kicked against Israel launching a military campaign in Rafah, the reason for the vetoe looks more likely the furtherance of political and diplomatic war between Russia and United States.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Moscow and Washington have not seen eye to eye. The vetoe is not in the interest of Gazans but a political move to show US that it won’t have its way when it needs.
The resolution is the first time United States is calling for a ceasefire, against the wish of Israel in the security council.
United States is exploring every means possible to stop Israel’s potential invasion of Rafah. Russia’s naivety may have given Israel the licence to carry on with the intended incursion.
Politics is being played in the United Nations Security Council instead of humanity based ideals. By virtue of China and Russia’s veteo, hostages will not be mandated to be released and Israel will not be mandated to stop Rafah invasion.
