A reminder of Putin’s viciousness after Prigozhin’s half baked coup in Russia, Alexey Navalny will now spend 19years in prison on extremism charges. Russian State controlled media reported the news with flare, either to please the man in power or deter others from speaking up – against Putin’s regime.
Navalny is a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin – Russian strong man. It takes quite a lot of balls to speak ill of President Putin – whose critics always die mysteriously. Getting 19 years prison time is fairer than spending eternity below the surface of the earth. Navalny knows, life in prison is a blessing compared to the condition of other critics of the polished dictator.
Simply; Putin’s government believe Navalny is the puppet of the West, and he has been treated to the same viciousness with which Putin treats West he claimed is “a threat” to Russia’s existence. The court and all Russian institutions are under the whims of Putin; he makes the final call in a country refined democracy is but a forbidden call.
Navalny was accused of creating extremist community – the community he finances and nurture – too many charges against him, to make it impossible for him to wriggle out of the legal hook of Putin. Eventually, he was found guilty on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the high security penal colony in which he has been kept.
It was always clear he would be found guilty, after the coup, Putin needed to remind potential coupists that he is still as vicious as he was from the beginning, and anybody that gives himself in or fell into the temptation of coming up against his government will not be spared. Prigozhin might have tainted his ego, but Navalny’s further imprisonment is another good start.
Already serving sentences, the pronouncement of new sentence was important message passed duly. The 11 years and a half prison time previously handed down to him was on fraud and other charges the critic denied and said were staged. This time; extremism is a perfect charge, one that involves challenging Putin.
Navalny’s supporters cannot save him, but can only speak the truth nobody can do anything about. They have severally said the arrest of their leader was politically motivated and aimed to silence him and others speaking out against Putin. They said Putin was afraid of being opposed or challenged because he thrived on guns and power, not the people’s support.
Navalny had some words for his supporters and free Russians, with the aim to whip them up against Putin, but as the number of Putin’s critics’ shrinks, how will opposition survive in Russia. But he would not give up, while speaking about his new sentence, he hinted he would never be allowed to walk free anymore.
“Serving a life sentence” He said on Friday via a statement on Telegram, showing a glimpse of rare courage “19 years in a special regime colony. The number doesn’t matter. I understand very well that, like many political prisoners, I am serving a life sentence. Where life is measured by the duration of my life or the life of this regime. The number from verdict is not for me. it is for you” The text on Telegram said.
“They want to frighten you, not me, and deprive you of the will to resist. You are being forced to surrender your Russia without a fight to a gang of traitors, thieves and scoundrels who have seized power. Putin should not achieve his goal. Don’t lose the will to resist.
