Russia takes over United Nations Security Council, asked if it would act on US weapon used against Russia
It’s the turn of the Russian federation to chair the United Nations Security Council, and the takeover of the presidency comes with lofty expectation.
The Security Council of the committee of Nations is rotated, and every country has the opportunity to assume the position which is rotated monthly.
Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia will assume the position on behalf of Russia. He is expected to oversee a couple of debates or moves.
The position is not absolute and doesn’t change the process of voting or decision making.
Reacting to the ascension, Caleb Maupin, a journalist with Russian Today, a Russian State controlled media, asked the ambassador about the action he could take as the president.
Caleb Maupin pointed out to him the missile that was launched against civilians on Cremea beach.
Ukraine launched the attack, but US supplied weapons were used for the attack.
US supplied Ukraine the ammunition needed to combat Russia, a ban was initially placed on the weapons, limiting its use in Russia.
Recently, United States lifted the ban, allowing Ukraine attack Russia from anywhere attack emanated against it.
Cremea was annexed in 2014 by Russia, it has since been under the control of Russia.
The ambassador noted that United Nations Security Council has taken into considerations the comments made by European Union and US. He said European Union said there was “zero evidence” that US supplied weapon was used.
He further insinuated that the Security Council under Russian presidency cannot do anything extraordinary.
It would take votes in the security council for anything to be passed. Also, considering the Veto power of United States, Russian presidency will likely have zero impact.
There are too many outlines before the Security Council. The Middle-East conflict and Asian continental provocations are the priorities for the council.
