Boko Haram started like Rivers crisis – G60 cartel says
“These were how Boko Haram and all the security issues we are dealing with in Nigeria started and we shouldn’t allow this explosion in a political protest” the group of Federal Lawmakers said, citing the ongoing political instability in Rivers State.
The group was formed by federal Lawmakers to counter Nyesome Wike, whose influence in Rivers State has destabilised the State politics.
Rivers has been divided into two political cartels, those fighting for Nyesome Wike and those fighting for Governor Fubara. They make accusations and counter-accusations.
The Lawmakers have waded into the recent protest by supporters of Wike, who are pushing a counter-protest ignited by supporters of Governor Fubara.
Rivers is grappling with significant insecurity after Governor Fubara allowed it to blow up after months of patient.
There is practically no gainsaying that it’s the fault of the Governor, whose supporters began what has turned into major crisis in the State.
His supporters decided to take laws into their hands by storming Local Government Secretariat to evict Local Council Chairmen who are battling with the Governor over tenure elongation.
Since the ascension of the Governor, Rivers fell into chaos. The chaos is as a result of political disharmony between the Governor and Minister Nyesome Wike.
The former governor who is now the minister of Federal Capital Territory laid down everything to singlehandedly make Fubara the Governor of the state. In return, Fubara didn’t want to submit to the dictates of the former leader of the state.
Godfatherism is a prevalent practice in Nigerian politics, even though the practice often backfires. Some beneficiaries of godfatherism tend to breakaway, leading to chaos.
Governor Fubara while making statements in the past had said that he was exercising patient, and refusing to stamp his authority because he wants peace in the state.
He further said that his calm approach to the matter in the state was being taken for granted by the supporters of the former governor. Going further, he reminded his opposition that he is the governor and has the powers to act.
The lawmakers reacted to the protest by Nyesome Wike supporters whom they accused of planting explosives. The accusation despite lack of investigation points to partisan political statement.
“It’s the role of the police to investigate and come up with facts and statement. The Lawmakers making statement of that nature from a distance shows their lack of bipartisan approach to the matter” our reporter monitoring the situation says.
the Lawmakers in quote stated.
“We wish to condemn in strong terms the idea of protesters moving about with explosives and more importantly these are supporters of a serving minister. We have already heard that one or two persons died because of the device exploded, this is very worrisome”
They further chided the security agencies, and urged them to use the same energy used against the Governor to finding out about the explosives, before saying Boko Haram terrorists began the same way.
“The security agencies should use the energy they are using in sealing up local government headquarters to actually find out how explosives were moved into Rivers State.
