Chinue Achebe International Airport: Soludo touches Anambra State aviation sector

The governor of Anambra State has been on the push to explore ways to create huge internally generated revenue for the state because his administration has refused to follow the traditional way of borrowing.

The effort has shifted his attention to the aviation sector of the state, which was launched by his predecessor.

In a strategic move to boost aviation operations and attract more airlines to Anambra State, the government has allocated ₦489 million for the installation of night-landing equipment at the Chinua Achebe International Airport. This decision, announced by Dr. Law Mefor, the state’s information commissioner, was taken at the 34th Executive Council meeting. The contract for this project has been awarded to Mercy Aviation Communication Electronics and Industries Nig Ltd, and work is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The installation of night-landing facilities at Chinua Achebe International Airport marks a major step toward establishing it as a fully operational, 24-hour airport. Night-landing capability is a critical feature for airports as it allows for extended operating hours, which is likely to attract additional airlines, increase flight options for passengers, and stimulate economic growth in the region. The upgrade aligns with the state government’s vision to make Anambra a regional hub for trade, tourism, and investment.

The airport has been behind when it comes to competiting with other airports in the region due to a lack of night flights that largely led to travellers using Asaba Airport for most travels in the region.

Speaking on the decision, Dr. Mefor expressed optimism that the addition of night-landing facilities would significantly boost the appeal of the airport to both airlines and travelers. “This development will not only increase convenience for passengers but will also enhance the overall economic potential of the airport. With 24-hour service, Chinua Achebe International Airport can now accommodate more flights, which will promote business and tourism across the state,” he said.

In addition to the airport upgrades, the Anambra State government approved several other key projects aimed at boosting infrastructure and tourism. These include the development of a comprehensive Heritage and Tourism Master Plan, budgeted at ₦125.8 million, which aims to harness Anambra’s rich cultural heritage to attract both domestic and international tourists. Another notable project is the reconstruction of the entrance gate at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, which will cost ₦112.7 million and is intended to improve accessibility and security at the medical institution.

Further infrastructure upgrades were also approved to enhance power supply, fencing, and public amenities across various parts of the state. These improvements reflect the state government’s commitment to advancing Anambra’s infrastructure and creating a more conducive environment for residents and visitors alike.

The night-landing equipment project and additional infrastructure improvements signal Anambra’s commitment to leveraging its resources for economic growth and modernising its facilities to match international standards. As these projects reach completion, they are expected to transform Anambra into a more accessible, appealing, and economically vibrant destination.

The bold move by the governor was lauded by Anambrarians who believe that beyond revenue, the upgrade of the airport will attract further development.

“People are buying lands around the airport, but when you get there, you find out that people are not developing their properties at a commendable pace because travellers are scarce. Most see the airport as underfunded, pushing to choose Asaba airport,” a residence of Nteje says when asked for his reaction.

The state government has been commended for its effort to avoid borrowing, but the move also shifted the burden of filling the state pocket on the people of Anambra State, who now complain about too much taxes.

There is a sigh of relief that if the governor embraces investment for generation of revenue, it would help ease the people of excruciating taxes.
