Journalists have been arrested in the Edo election after they failed to give sufficient identification of where they came from.
Although they had cameras, the police insisted on arresting them because they had no clearance or official press tag for the election.
Speaking about the incident, In a statement on Saturday, the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said a journalist was arrested.
“A fake journalist who claimed to be a staff member of one of Nigeria’s leading television stations was also apprehended,” he said.
The spokesperson further praised the effort of the Nigerian police to maintain law and order during the election.
“Our team’s meticulous planning and swift action have dealt a significant blow to those seeking to undermine and discredit the electoral process. We remain vigilant and committed to ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful election. Investigations are ongoing, and updates will be provided as events unfold.”
The long-awaited Edo election on the first day of voting had everything expected of a typical Nigerian election, with the front-runners pushing to have an edge over another.
A relatively peaceful election, but irregularities have been reported across the states. The buildup to the election carried tension, but on election day, it was contained.
Elsewhere, EFCC stormed polling stations to forestall the vote-buying after they had a tip-off that some party agents were planning to buy votes.
Most voters come to polling stations with hope of selling their votes, which is considered illegal in the country.
Arrests were reportedly made by EFFC, although their operatives are not used to issuing statements regarding elections.
