Southeast Governors finally decide to help Nnamdi Kanu after two years of detention
Southeast Governors’ Forum has finally resolved to interface with the federal government to trigger the release of the leader of IPOB leader.
The governors have been pointed as the people obstructing Nnamdi Kanu’s release from DSS detention, their meeting has once more shown they are positive with the plea for his release.
The governors waited after more than two years before holding yesterday’s meeting.
The meeting and decision to wade into the case could be as a result of Nnamdi Kanu’s open demand for negotiation on the terms of the federal government.
The meeting resolved to release Nnamdi Kanu among other things.
Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Kenya and renditioned to Nigeria after after jumping bail. His rendition was a subject of legal conundrum that almost secured his release through the court.
A High Court ordered his release, but was overturned by the Supreme Court, which initially ordered stay of execution, before finally cancelling the bail given by the lower court.
His release became a concern for Southeast leaders and politicians, after the IPOB leader openly informed the court that he was willing to negotiate with the Federal Government.
Negotiation will ultimately lead to ending his agitation, or agitate within the confines of the Nigerian law, which would ultimately dictate his actions.
The IPOB leader was forced into accepting negotiation after his numerous applications were thrown out by the high court hearing the matter.
Perceived that the court would eventually find him guilty, he succumbed to out of court settlement.
Since his detention, Southeast was thrown into the abyss of insecurity. Emboldened by Simon Ekpa who was announced as the second to Kanu, but fell out of favour with Nnamdi Kanu’s Directorate of States, the insecurity in the Southeast remains a challenge.
It is largely believed that Nnamdi Kanu’s release could lead to stability in the Southeast, but Simon Ekpa who remains a catalyst is a threat.
