Natural disaster hits Lagos, death reported
There was no NEMA agent on ground even hours after a building collapsed on Wednesday. People had to barely pull out debris with their bare hands.
National Emergency Management Agency was created for such tragedies and other disasters, they once more failed in their job to rescue lives of Nigerians.
Loved ones of the persons reportedly trapped under collapsed building in Lagos only had to cry, noiseless inside the wreck, they have a feeling their loved ones have died.
The faint voices under the debris of the collapsed building have zero chance of making it out. Even if NEMA will come, time won’t be for the victims.
The rain that started on Wednesday soon became massive that it caused flooding, leaving parts of Lagos submerged, while a building collapsed under thunderstorm and lightning.
“Iyana-Oworo, Olopo meji area heading to 3rd Mainland Bridge this morning is completely flooded, causing long traffic that extends to Alapere.” an X formerly know as Twitter user updated. The update is to help citizens making inroads to the direction to turn back.
Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted thunderstorm and rains throughout the week, with exception of weekend.
People in Nigeria barely pay attention to Nigeria Meteorological Agency updates. Their warning or predictions barely affect the schedule of Nigerians.
There was a notable update for the Northern States, which aims to warn ahead of time that there would be rain and thunderstorms.
“This rain is too much,” complained a citizen that posted a video of the collapsed building.
According to the report, there were people in the house when it collapsed.
“Upstairs always collapse in this Lagos, some collapse due to they are weak, while others collapse due to poor construction” a citizen said.
Nigerians barely consider getting necessary approvals, and there is no committee of professional engineers for building.
Shadia Estate by canal was entirely submerged, with aerial video showing submerged cars and houses.
Lagosians have complained about drainage in the State, with some saying that the state government has failed to construct massive drainage that can be channelled to the sea.
“Lagos, Lagos, my brother, here no dey properly planned. In the dry season, you think you are in a city, raining season, you see yourself in the water. E remain make we turn into fish and swim” a resident said in protest.
Another citizen who spoke to Dailytab24 said the government is to be blamed because of not channelling the rain. He also blamed house owners.
“The rain is responsible… is responsible for the many disastrous experiences we have here. Although we know some buildings carry weight, wey pass them, but rain should be addressed first. ”
Engineers have been blamed for most of the collapsed buildings in the state by the government. They said they don’t come in for inspection and approvals.
“They trade blames now because they have killed people. The government collect money from Engineers, and close their eyes to poor constructions. Imagine adding more floors on a pillar or foundation made for one storey”
House owners have commercialised their buildings, making them add floors for more money.
