- Polygamy gets a much needed support from a Nollywood Actress
Yvonne Jegede has come out openly to defend Yul Edochie who has come under sustained scrutiny for taking in a second wife.
The Nollywood actress argued that she doesn’t see anything wrong with the choice made by Yul Edochie and insisted most people attacking him came from polygamous families.
Her defense came in a latest segment of The Honest Bunch podcast. Her defense of polygamy is strange, due to that most women in the country have always frayed the concept.
She defended Edochie’s choice, saying that she saw nothing inherently wrong with him embracing polygamy and taking a second wife.
While the famed Actress failed to delve deeper into the nature of Yul Edochie’s polygamous life, taking into record that he destroyed a family to stand a family.
Yul raised controversies when he announced marriage with Judy Austin, his long extramarital girlfriend. The announcement offended his wife who took offence and left her marriage with him.
Issue later deteriorated and his children also left his home. His grownups were not okay with the sudden marriage announcement, and felt their father betrayed their mother.
“You see this same Yul Edochie, ehn, 99% of people that are abusing him on the internet are from second wives, third wives, fourth wives, and even fifth wives.” The Actress said.
However, in Igbo culture, polygamy is defined as having more than one wife and keeping the wives safe and home.
While Western value says you have to terminate one to move to another. Yul Edochie’s concept was a forced Western value.
Yul’s marital problem that evicted his first wife, a problem that stemmed from second wife announcement cannot rightly be called proper polygamy.
“He is owning his BS with his chest, but nobody is going to support him, even me. I have to stand with the crowd so they don’t curse me. I don’t see anything he’s done wrong; most of us are from second wives.” Jegede added.
The point the Actress failed to raise is the shutting down of first marriage for the sake of second marriage is not proper polygamy. Yul could not marry two wives, and he is presently marrying one wife.
“Why are we cursing the guy? They would curse him and leave Ned Nwoko alone, and say Regina Daniels is your prayer point, and she’s the only one that can advise you about marriage. These are the comments I see.”
Yul cannot right be compared to Senator Ned Nwoko who peacefully kept many wives. Ned didn’t destroy his previous marriages at the expense of new one. That is the clear difference between polygamy and divorce.
Senator Ned Nwoko’s ability to marry more than one wife and sustain the marriages is the accurate definition of polygamy.
The Nollywood Actress spoke about polygamy from ignorant perspective. She failed to know or admit that Yul Edochie is not currently marrying two wives.
He chose another woman over his wife and not another woman with his first wife. The concept should be well defined to mirror the wisdom of our ancestors that embraced polygamy.
