Democracy Day: Exemplify patriotism, Kalu tells Nigerian politicians

Former governor of Abia State and the lawmaker representing Abia North in the red carpet chamber, Dr. Orji Kalu has called on the political class to uphold the tenets of democracy in their pursuits.

Senator Kalu who is the chairman for Senate Committee on Privatization while describing the country’s democratic rule as a positive development, noted the importance of civilian rule in accelerating growth and development across the country.

Kalu called on the government and the citizenry to work collectively in sustaining democratic virtues, adding that Nigeria’s democracy has been growing steadily.

He made these remarks in commemoration of this year’s democracy day and the 31st anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

He said, “I congratulate Nigerians on the celebration of this year’s democracy day.

“We owe Nigeria’s founding fathers gratitude for their efforts in building a united and indivisible nation.

“The enthronement of democracy has brought robust development to the country.

“Nigeria’s democracy is still growing and as such, all hands must be on deck to sustain the feat.

“Politicians must live up to expectations by playing the tbe game by the rules.

“The will of the people must be respected in a democratic set up before, during and after elections.

“The political class must see politics as a platform to serve the people and not as an opportunity for self aggrandizement.

“Let us join hands together in building a prosperous nation anchored of justice and equity”.

Kalu while commending Nigerians for sustaining their support for the President Tinubu- led federal government, cautioned politicians against heating up the polity.
