Federal Government Should Be Decisive With Abuja Kidnapping And Insecurity
A transcript of a press statement released by a Diaspora group fighting for good governance in Nigeria has advised Nigerian government on the ways to go about incissant kidnappings in the country.
The group whose leadership is based in UK fights for good governance and believes insecurity in the country would hamper actualization of the group’s aim for Nigerians.
Kidnapping is now a lucrative business in Nigeria, due to the unhindered ransom payments that go with every case. The inability of the Nigerian security to arrest the situation has pushed the group to advise the government to explore other means to tame the tide of insecurity, including amnesty.
Every effort made so far by the Nigerian police to discourage victim’s loved ones from paying ransom has not yielded as victims always face execution if ransom are not timely paid.
The group asked the government to look beyond bullets and guns, and seek a political solution to the insecurity. It’s often believed that opposition in the country artificially cause insecurity to discredit the ruling party, but there is no evidence to buttress the claim, yet the group wants all stones to be turned.
Here is the transcript
“PIGGD commend the efforts of the Nigerian police for the prompt and successful operation that led to the release of Al-Kadriyar sisters. Yet, the police force should not rest on their laurel, they should instead forge ahead to arrest the current security threat in the country.
While clearly the security situation in Abuja was inherited from the past government’s mistakes and negligence, President Bola Amed Tinubu must understand that it’s a burden placed on him to offload.
PIGGD is extremely concerned about the lives of Nigerians lost to the insecurity. The trauma loved ones go through when their families are kidnapped. And the vices that come with insecurity. We strongly believe in the experience of the President to handling the issue.
Federal Government should be decisive with handling of the deteriorating security situation of the federal capital territory, and must endeavor to employ new tactics in handling the situation.
Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba with other ethnic nationalities that comprise of Nigeria are victims of the insecurity. Our security agencies must shut out the idea of bringing in ethnic politics into a serious security issue. All Nigerians of ethnic background must come together and address the insecurity.
The federal government should know that issue of security is not exclusive to the security forces alone, there is need to approach the troubling insecurity with wisdom and not overly depending on guns which has proven difficult.
We are aware of the possibility of blackmail, opposition and bitter souls who are bent to blackmail the administration of the President to score a political point upon which they make a case. The President should find out other ways to dialogue to end the insecurity.
Amnesty was successful in Niger Delta crisis and can be successful any time. We therefore urge the President to go extra miles in ensuring peace in restored in Abuja.
The security chiefs should be ordered to intensify actions against the criminals while other options are explored.
Signed.
