Killing in Southeast will continue to hamper good governance PIGGD
A Diaspora group convened by comrade Wisdom Okpara has reacted to the incissant killings in Southeast part of Nigeria.it.
The region has be grappling with insecurity as a result of secessionist agenda that now appears to have gone wrong. Since the arrest of the leader of a predominant group of agitators in the region, killings intensified.
What initially started with ESN, a group formed by the leading group in the region, ended up transforming into unknown gun men. Unknown gun men which started by attacking police stations later began to record civilian casualties.
Decrying the rate of the killings in the region, the convener of PIGGD has demanded a thorough measure to confront the menace that he said threatens the economic stability of the region. He made it clear that all hands must be on deck to making sure killings in the region is addressed.
In a full press statement made available to Daily Tab24, the convener made a call for new approach to addressing the insecurity in the region. While he didn’t aim a dig at the Nigerian police, it appears he thinks the police and military has failed to address the insecurity.
Below is transcript of his press statement.
“We PVC Initiative for Good Governance Diaspora utterly condemn the latest killings in Southeast, where heads are beheaded and innocent citizens are targeted at different locations. The killings have persevered and it is time for stakeholders to rise up to the occasion.
The killings in Southeast by non-state actors have cost the region the needed development while other regions take advantage of the insecurity to develop their regions. We understand the perpetrators are ignorant of the consequences of their actions and this is why Southeast leaders must come together and fight the insecurity.
PIGGD call on the commissioner of police of the Southeastern states to intensify their campaigns and combat the criminals that try to make Southeast inhabitable.
The police are saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and properties and they should put more effort in curbing the crimes cross the region.
Killings will help nobody in Southeast, it won’t help the region to attract the presence of the Federal Government and neither would it attract investors in the region.
The government of Bola Amed Tinubu has shown the willingness to galvanize and include all regions, but the killings will instead harm the good plans of the President for the region.
We also call on the military to professionally topple the organized criminals syndicates that that have sworn to make the region a killing haven.
The political leaders of the region should also device a new strategy to combat the insecurity, even if it involves contracting indigenous security to combat the region’s problem. The killings and other instabilities in the region will continue to be a barrier against good governance in the region.
Southeast region needs economic intervention, but to achieve the economic plan of the region, insecurity must first be addressed and addressing insecurity must start from everyone. New means of addressing insecurity should be trialed in the region.
