Nigerian entertainment industry lost an artist with great potential, may his soul rest in peace. Irrespective of what anyone thinks or whose side anyone is on, we simply have to follow the footstep of Naira Marley, de convict, who has mourned the death of his former artist and promised to support his family.
The panel of judges involved was thousands of Nigerian music lovers and Nigerian online clout chasers. In the online court of Facebook, X, formerly called Twitter, Instagram and Tik-Tok, the singer was found guilty of murder. Even though the victim was not physically confronted at the time of death, beaten to death, poisoned or neither was any cause of death determined. The panel of judges concluded that Naira Marley murdered Mohbad and the Nigerian singer has been sentenced.
In a state in Nigeria, the singer’s music was sentenced to death, with a clear ban on his music. In another enforcement court of appeal, there is a notable push for the singer’s music to be banned online or taken out. Many people are beginning to speak up against Naira Marley, they said he once shouted at the deceased colleague and fought him in the past.
Mohbad was quickly buried the next day, without consideration of possibility of a miracle. Doctor must have pronounced him dead, yet, it doesn’t mean he should be buried the next day. But that is his religion, perhaps, his religion doesn’t support mortuary or delay. I understand how religiously inclined Africans are, but, let’s give the dead a chance to die convincingly.
The whole scenario seems to be based on afterthought, Mohbad died untimely, but it appeared to be natural death. Had Mohbad been murdered or there was obvious crime that caused his death, he would not have been buried hastily. Nigerian police would have taken over the corpse with due process followed before his burial.
To buttress my afterthought claim, exhumation will be done and a process that was supposed to come first will now come after. The death of Mohbad is unfortunate, but Nigerians have taken advantage of it to chase clout and fame. Anybody that speaks about his death is likely to gain online attention, with the ultimate goal being fame.
Nigerian police has been influenced by the online panel of judges and activism that have swept across the country. Lagos state government, the economic hub of the country, has declared intention to investigate the death of the musician. The police was recorded to have said anyone behind the death of Mohbad would be apprehended with Interpol.
Naira Marley is the accused and convict, and the statement of the police appears to point a finger at Naira Marley who is currently out of the country. A popular human right lawyer in the country has also declared interest in the case, strongly recommending a coroner into the demise of the musician.
Naira Marley was convicted online because he once had a problem with the young artist he signed, who left his record label in an acrimonious manner. The artist accused Marley of threat to his life, with physical fight reported in the past.
Fighting among Nigerian artists is a culture, just like American music industry in the 1990s, competition abounds. Grammy award winning Burner Boy was once accused of having a confrontation with Davido. Claims were made against Naira Marley by Mohbad when he was alive, but those are normal claims among Nigerian artists.
Within the family of Mohbad, they believe there was a foul play, but his father believes it has more to do with spirituality than physicality, claiming he knew his son would die. His mother claimed he was killed because he was bullied during his fight with Naira Marley’s record label.
Investigation is on, but online panel of judges have already sentenced Naira Marley, even as they claim investigation is a waste of time. Like everyone out there, Naira Marley is innocent until proven guilty. Nigerian soldier media users need some help on how to behave well.
