Kim Jong Un in Russia for possible arms deal with Putin
Invitation By Daily Tab24. Updated: Sep 12, 2023.
It started on the day North Korea marked its 75th anniversary of the founding of North Korea with a parade of paramilitary forces in Pyongyang’s Kim II Sung Square. The event provided opportunity for Kim Jong Un to invite his allies, who witnessed the parade and later held a trilateral discussions on the way forward for them.
Chinese delegation and Russian diplomat attended the anniversary on behalf of their respective country’s leaders. It is known the three are the arch enemies of the West, and no conviction is needed for alignment. The three are natural allies; and pushed by one goal – to defeat the West and enthrone their country’s to influence world order.
South Korean news agency seems to be closely monitoring the movement of Kim Jong Un when it reported the North Korean leader had left his country for Russia by train. The news was not confirmed by North Korean controlled news firm and neither did Moscow. But there was prior information that Kim Jong Un would visit Russia.
The next day (today), there was a confirmation of Kim Jong Un in Russia. Interfax news agency confirmed that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the North Korean leader “is now in Russia”. The purpose of the visit was not made open by the spokesman and neither did North Korean leader’s office make any public statement concerning the purpose of the meeting.
While there would always be a meeting or discussion on how to triumph over the West, the war in Ukraine appears to be Putin’s concern. The war has not only cost Putin funds and time, but has led to the murder of his foot soldier, Prigozhin. The war has also caused the first major shakeup of Putin 23 years rule of Russia – when Prigozhin led his fighters against Putin’s military leaders.
North Korea, Russia and China are under severe Western sanctions and they are fighting back and doing everything to maneuver the sanctions. The coming together of the three countries is a necessity, but they should seek a better way to approach their quest than engage in military operations when chips didn’t go their ways.
There is a belief that the war in Ukraine is behind the visit of the North Korean leader. Putin is running short of arms and needs to reinforce. The war in Ukraine has surpassed what was expected. Into the two years of the war, Putin didn’t expect it to last this long. As a result, there is need to re-strategize and meet up with timing.
Kim Jong Un may have decided to come to Russia to negotiate personally with Putin on what he would get back from Russia if he helps with arms delivery that Russia needs to make its military operation in Ukraine successful. The face to face talk is important to Kim Jon Un whose country is suffering shortage of food due to flood.
Whatsoever becomes of the talk in Russia, Kim Jong would gain and Ukraine would be the loser. The counteroffensive of Ukraine may have affected Russia to the point a new approach is needed and with new arms, Ukraine will find it hard to succeed with its counteroffensive.
