The most used fuel for nuclear energy – a fuel that is capable of making a super power country, Niger is the world’s seventh largest producer of uranium. Even if Niger is the number one on the list; they would remain one of the world’s poorest countries, which is the stack reality facing a country colonized by French, which suffers great neo-colonialism.
A coup was carried out by Nigeriens – a coup that toppled a pro-western government, which poses great threat to exploitation and export of uranium. Uranium is owned by Niger but France is the destination of the nuclear fuel. As a humble French child; Niger is expected to surrender everything to their father, who nursed and sustained them through government stooges.
There have been meetings upon meetings in Europe and elsewhere. Calls flying from one country to another, simply because Nigeriens decided to choose a military government. Of course; presidential guard commander carried out the coup, but we have seen Nigeriens celebrating and supporting the coup, it’s a kind of plebiscite, they want it and who is disturbed by what Nigeriens want?
ECOWAS was quick to threaten military action. We all know the bloc is pro-west. They simply made a threat because they were barked on to make the threat, with the aim to restore European interests in Niger. After the threats; Nigeriens took to the streets to register their anger – verbally insulting the chairman of ECOWAS whose government they said was a product of Western influence.
“We will fight, let France leave our country. They have military base here, yet, we suffer immense terrorists attacks” a protester proclaimed. He didn’t care to take a look at the statistic; because the French-backed President Basoum was doing credibly well in the fight against terrorists. But the protester with his hundreds of thousands of comrades are determined and made up their mind; all they want is the expulsion of French soldiers.
“They have occupied our land – a military occupation but it is for our resources. They take everything and leave us with nothing. We are the poorest because they take everything we have” Another yelled, holding Russian flag.
Their anger is due. Their colonial master has taken too much. Basoum was no longer needed in Niger, it was widely believed his government was French-imposed. Although, he prevailed on the ballot, the numbers didn’t lie. Niger had had enough of governments they didn’t approve coming in and taking control of their common destiny.
“ECOWAS should leave us alone” another shouted to a crew of media holding cameras. It was becoming a serious problem because ECOWAS would have Nigerien civilians to fight before getting to the military. It becomes even a herculean job to execute. ECOWAS military intervention is most likely to be against civilians in Niger, whose anger against the government of Basoum would spur to fight and play intelligence role with the military.
Nigeriens are standing with the coupist “This is our coup, the peoples coup and we welcome the military intervention of our soldiers” another said, declaring total support for the army. The coup in Niger may be against the constitution, but firmly a military mandate backed and welcomed by the people.
The massive support enjoyed by the junta will be that factor that saved the day, but external forces appear to be blind, they won’t see the support and walk away, because it’s what the people want. Any intervention against the junta is an intervention against the people of Niger. As time ticks; it gets even harder for external forces to penetrate Niger because the unity of the people will keep jackals and hyenas away from the common good of the people of Niger.
