Nigerien coup plotters have embraced civility in the most possible way, aimed to demonstrate their desire to effecting change rather than vicious or bloody move. Since the commander of the presidential guard seized power, he has kept external communication with ousted President, Bazoum, open.
In a telephone conversation; Anthony Blinken has assured the ousted President of US backing, but it remains unknown how the backing will materially be shown.
In a quick, but proactive measure, US have evacuated their non-emergency personnel, in apparent fear of arm conflict or martial law. Reacting to the unnecessary evacuation; Tiani has noted that those evacuating has no “Objectivity”.
In what appears like a politically motivated move to raise false alarm and draw unnecessary attention or show disapproval, European countries have started evacuating their nationals. Heating up the polity and creating the impression of innevitable major political turmoil or potential military action.
Reports gathered by Daily Tab24 can authoritatively confirm heightened military buildup on both sides of the issue. ECOWAS have taken a few steps with sanctions and cutting of power supply by the lead ECOWAS country, Nigeria. The idea of military option remains open and being coordinated by ECOWAS.
On the side of Niger; information independently sourced by Daily Tab24 confirmed that Mali and Burkina Faso are willing to walk their joint pres statements. Eventual military action triggered by ECOWAS or AU would likely result to a full blown war – such as never seen in Africa before.
The press statement read out on their respective national broadcasters noted “ the transitional governments of Burkina Faso and Mali express their fraternal solidarity… to the people of Niger, who have decided with full responsibility to take their destiny in hand and assume the fullness of their sovereignty before history.
“Any military intervention against Niger would be tantamount to a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali” they further disclosed utmost willingness to counter any military action or interference in the “internal affairs of Niger” and added the move could beget “disastrous consequences” capable of “destabilize the entire region”
The military junta’ seem to be enjoying the support of the entire country, as solidarity march is observed with Russian, Malian and Niger flags billowing in the sky.
There is palpable fear that any military action could transcend into a civil war, should the supporters of the coup leaders yield to the patriotic call to “defend” the motherland.
US must find alternative way to intervene or reinstate the ousted President, a move believed to be on the desk already. ECOWAS and AU are likely to enjoy the support of US, but the resolve of the regional blocs to set Africa on fire remains the key factor in making decision.
Russia has indicated interest through Wagner Boss, Prigozhin, who has hailed the coup and insinuation from different quarters have pointed out that Russian mercenary forces will intervene should there be military confrontation.
The coup leader, Tiani, has not shown any sign of surrendering or yielding to the orders issued by EU, ECOWAS nor AU. There seems to be great resolve, ignited by the overwhelming support from Nigerien military and the citizens that have shown amazing support.
Assurance from US will come at a costly price should the promise be faithfully kept. Sanctions and diplomacy are the best tools for a complicated matter of this magnitude, but the actors in Niger have warned that everyone should hands off and leave Niger to her internal affairs.
The firm and strong position of the actors in Niger has made it quite uncomfortable for everyone involved in mediation or trying to reinstate the ousted President.
